Calculating Engagement: What Do They Want? is a great post by Jessica Krywosa on .eduguru. The idea of “engagement,” whether we’re talking about civic engagement or other types of engagement between students and campuses, identifying the many ways that engagement manifests itself through social media is important.
Even at levels where people don’t appear to be creating content, as Krywosa points out, it does not mean that they are not sharing information and knowledge gained through virtual networks, through interpersonal communication. As Krywosa points out:
“Just because no one is talking, doesn’t mean that no one is listening and, perhaps, attending events or passing along the info to others verbally.”
As we try to measure the impact of information technologies on our civic engagement efforts that is an important thing to remember.
